June 17
My plan was to get up at 5am but I didn't set an alarm and got up at 5:30. Ate a banana, granola bar, packed up and hit the road at 6:30am. It was a beautiful 43 degree morning with no wind. Yay!! My goal was to make it to a convenience store about 28 miles away and stop for a bite to eat. Hopefully the wind wouldn't start before then. And, after that, the road is more downhill than uphill all the way to Kalispell.
Look how still that water is. NO WIND!!!
Well, the day went as planned except that I was fighting a monster headache. It was probably from not eating enough. The prior day I had a good breakfast but did not eat anything for lunch. Then for dinner I just made a pack of Ramen and had a few handfuls of mixed nuts. In any case, I took some medication during the morning ride but it was not working. However, when I reached the convenience store I bought a breakfast burrito. After 2 bites my headache was gone!! Lesson learned. I really need to eat more, and more often.Closer to Kalispell I picked up this rail trail.
This trail went almost all the way into Kalispell. It was nice to get off the shoulder of the road and away from traffic for a little while.
Tomorrow, Thursday, is my first rest day of the trip. I tried to schedule a day off about every 2 weeks to rest my legs. I'm looking forward to that.
